Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Updated: Sep 20, 2022

One of the most misquoted scriptures in the bible. But let’s examine it and break it down. Pride goeth before destruction, so before destruction comes, there is the presence of pride. Pride is having an inflated view of oneself. Relying on one’s abilities, intellect, gifts and talents. We are talking about having no room for God. We have to understand that we are not independent. We should fully depend of God. I emphasize fully. Pride can also be described as a self-centered person. Their world consists of only them. Their desires, their needs, and their way. Things in their life must cater to them.

Let’s go on to the second part of the scripture. An haughty spirit before a fall. There are many examples of this and here is one that really lays it out. Lucifer. He was such a beautiful being. He was called “Morning Star” and “Son of the Dawn”. He was an anointed cherub but he let that beauty go to his head. Lucifer thought he would be like God himself. Isn’t it funny how He deceived Adam and Eve with the same thing being like God? But God who is all-knowing, knew his heart and knew what he wanted. So God cast him out from his holy presence. He literally fell and lost his high position because of the iniquity found in his heart.

Remember your need for God, we are nothing without Him. Do like the song says and make room for Him. Let God fill every space of your heart.

I run from the great fall

Driven by the desire to be seen

Tipping and tilting

Resisting the enemy’s seduction

Of the larger than life me

My head lowered

Obedience reminds me

Doors unlocked, windows open

Pouring mercy like a hurricane

Stills my beating soul
